What's coming in WordPress 7.2, and when is it due?
WordPress 7.2 is scheduled for release on December 8, 2026, with the first beta planned for October 20, 2026. The published roadmap lists planned work on Notes suggestions, security work such as a Secrets API and Application Password hardening, styling for form elements, new Table of Contents and Description List blocks, clearer error messages, and a new default theme called Ipsum. These are plans, not promises: the WordPress team says not everything on the roadmap is guaranteed to make the final release.

The schedule
According to the WordPress 7.2 release party schedule on make.wordpress.org (times are 15:00 UTC, which is 8:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time in October and 7:00 a.m. Pacific Standard Time after November 1):

Planned changes that may matter to you
These come from the "Roadmap to 7.2" post. The roadmap states that listed items are being actively worked on but may not all ship in 7.2.
Collaboration
- Notes suggestions: suggest an edit that someone else can accept or reject, plus emoji reactions and a toolbar shortcut for adding notes.
Security
- "Sudo mode": early work has started on possibly asking you to re-enter your password before certain sensitive admin actions, even when you are already logged in.
- Secrets API: a built-in way for WordPress and plugins to store credentials more safely.
- Application Passwords: hardening and an email notification when a new application password is added.
Design and editing
- Style form elements (buttons, text fields, drop-downs, labels) in Global Styles without code.
- More responsive styling options, building on WordPress 7.1.
- See inherited styles in a block's settings, so it is clearer when a block uses your site-wide style.
- Fixes for small editor annoyances with typing, selecting, pasting and drag-and-drop.
New blocks
- Table of Contents block, moving from experimental to stable.
- Description List block for glossaries, specs and similar term-and-definition content.
Everyday admin
- Clearer error messages with a button to copy the error, which makes it easier to send to support.
- New admin icons: the admin bar and menu move from an icon font to SVG icons.
- Media improvements, including a redesigned media inserter.
New default theme
- Ipsum: a deliberately minimal theme meant as a blank canvas, planned to ship with 7.2.
What is not in 7.2
The roadmap says real-time collaborative editing (several people editing at once) is intentionally left off the 7.2 plan while work continues. AI features are being developed in a separate AI plugin, with no guarantee they land in 7.2.
What should site owners do now?
- Nothing urgent. Do not install beta or release candidate versions on your live business site. WordPress itself advises testing them only on test sites. If you want to try 7.2 early, use a staging copy: staging with WP Toolkit is included on every plan.
- Stay current on 7.1.x. As of mid-October 2026 that means 7.1.3.
- In early December, check that your theme and key plugins have recent updates.
- When 7.2 is out, update during a quiet time, with a fresh backup, and check your important pages.
ParsonsHosting keeps offsite backups three times a week (Monday, Tuesday and Friday) on every plan.
